摘要

Most of the antiviral drugs developed so far have been specifically designed to target particular pathogens and their unique viral pathways. However, due to their pathogen-specific nature, these drugs may not effectively combat a wide range of viruses. This necessitates the development of broad-spectrum antivirals capable of tackling multiple viral infections. Host-directed antiviral therapy (HDAT) presents a promising treatment option for viral infections. HDAT has the potential to be effective against various viruses, including those that mutate quickly or show resistance to traditional antiviral medications, as it focuses on host factors rather than the virus itself. By boosting the immune response or modifying cellular processes, HDAT aims to create an unfavorable environment for viral replication. The efficacy of HDAT and vaccines depends on the specific virus and the characteristics of the individual undergoing treatment. HDAT offers new opportunities for antiviral drug development by targeting host-specific vulnerabilities. The article also discusses different types of HDAT, such as immunomodulatory therapies, cell-based therapies, therapies that target host factors, repurposed drugs, and natural products. Ultimately, the choice of therapy depends on the virus’s properties, the interaction between the virus and the host, and the host’s health status.
