Effect of Oxygen Supply on Behavior of Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) Cemented Soil

Despite the great number of studies on microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) on soils, the effect of the oxygen supply employed in the treatment on the behaviour of MICP cemented soils has received little attention. The influence of oxygen supply on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), calcium carbonate content (CCC), and porosity of MICP-cemented soil was investigated in this paper. Microscopy research utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also conducted to investigate the calcium carbonate precipitation pattern. Although the strength of all evaluated samples increased after MICP treatment, the extent of this increase differed depending on the aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with the aerobic condition producing stronger samples. This is due to the varied calcium carbonate precipitation patterns seen in SEM images. In UCS experiments, different failure patterns were detected in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
