摘要

Haemovigilance is a vital process encompassing safe blood collection, processing, and transfusion for donors and recipients. Originating in France, it has evolved globally to mitigate reactions, infections, and quality issues tied to blood transfusion. This chapter explores the evolution of haemovigilance, its scope, significance, limitations, and recommendations. Donor and recipient viewpoints on blood transfusion and related reporting are provided. This chapter also showcases the ISTARE database’s role in international haemovigilance collaboration, the Indian National Haemovigilance Programme, and other countries’ initiatives. A discussion on the challenges of implementing a haemovigilance system, such as inconsistent reporting and funding, and recommendations for a better haemovigilance system are reported. Throughout the chapter, emerging trends and global initiatives outlining the prospects of haemovigilance in ensuring safe blood transfusion practices are provided.
