Vaccine Safety Surveillance

Vaccine safety surveillance is an essential component of public health initiatives to assure the safety and effectiveness of vaccination programs. This chapter looks into the fundamentals of vaccination safety monitoring, emphasizing its importance, methods, and results. The objective of vaccine safety monitoring is to detect and analyze adverse events that occur after immunization, which might range from minor local responses to uncommon, serious adverse events. Active and passive surveillance systems gather data from a variety of sources, including patients, healthcare professionals, and electronic health records. There are many well-established worldwide and national vaccine safety monitoring systems, such as the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) in the USA and the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) initiative. Vaccine safety monitoring is critical in ensuring the integrity of vaccination programs across the globe, thanks to an innovative combination of modern technology and coordinated efforts among researchers, healthcare practitioners, and regulatory agencies.
