摘要

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common but complex condition which poses challenges in diagnosis. For effective management, it is important to differentiate it from other conditions with microcytic hypochromic anemia such as anemia of chronic disorders, sideroblastic anemia, thalassemia, etc. In this chapter, a clinical case scenario is presented followed by a step-by-step evidence-based approach to utilize specialized and advanced tests to unravel final diagnosis of IDA. A comprehensive description of pathophysiology of disease, importance of Hepcidin, Free Erythrocyte protoporphyrin, red cell zinc protoporphyrin/heme ratio, serum transferrin receptors, ferroportin, reticulocyte hemoglobin content, and many more investigations in differential diagnosis of IDA are discussed in question–answer format. Salient points are summarized for quick revision. To gain expertise and enhance your skills for effective planning of management, read this chapter in iron deficiency anemia.
