On a relatively mundane and what was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon of April 3, 1948, bullets cracked across Sŏngsan Beach. The south Korean national police fired indiscriminately at a mass of suspected Communists and people who earnestly opposed a separate government in the south because it effectively meant, in their eyes, the termination to a history of a highly cohesively unified nation.
