Genome Editing to Improve Nutrition Status of Crop Plants

Genome editing technologies are being adopted globally to improve the nutrient quality of different fruits, vegetables, and staple or oil crops. These techniques are feasible, effective and provide a cutting-edge advantage over the traditional methods used. CRISPR/CAS9, TALENs, and ZFNs are the most widely used gene editing techniques. Till date, many genome-edited crops have been developed by different nations to boost the crop production, but most importantly to fight the biggest problem of “hidden hunger”. This chapter covers in detail these genome editing methods and their working and also highlights some important genetically edited crops already developed. We have also discussed the global status and viewpoint of the public and governments for the introduction of these crops in the market and what challenges need to be overcome for the full acceptance of these nutritionally improved crops worldwide.
