Public Health Aspects of Dhat Syndrome
摘要
Dhat syndrome, which is frequently observed on the Indian subcontinent, is characterised by a preoccupation with semen loss in urine as well as other symptoms, including fatigue or depression. This chapter aims to review the public health aspects of Dhat syndrome, the stigma attached to Dhat, and different preventive measures. Insufficient open communication within the family, particularly between parents and children, leaves young’s awareness of the Dhat syndrome-related issues limited to a source of knowledge from their peers, who are equally less informed about the subject, leading to widespread misconceptions. Patients with Dhat syndrome do not regularly show up for follow-up visits. Health education that involves sexual health education would improve awareness amongst the most vulnerable group (i.e. young adults) in those particular conservative societies (e.g. South Asia). This could include the anatomy and physiology of sex organs and the simplified function explanation.
