The Phenomenology of Dhat Syndrome

The term “phenomenology” refers to the study of conscious experiences from a first-person perspective. In psychiatry, phenomenology plays a vital role in the description and classification of symptoms, and in distinguishing between specific syndromes on the basis of the form and content of these symptoms. From its initial descriptions in the psychiatric literature, Dhat syndrome has been investigated from a phenomenological perspective, and has been characterized as a condition involving characteristic disturbances of thought, centering on the theme of semen loss, with associated changes in affect. More recent research has begun to uncover a possible tri-dimensional factor structure underlying the symptoms of Dhat syndrome, and has shed light on the phenomenology of Dhat syndrome in women. This chapter reviews the current state of evidence on the phenomenology of Dhat syndrome, with a focus on both form and content, and describes how phenomenology can inform the classification and management of this disorder.
