The chapter emphasizes the vital role of forests as biotic communities dominated by trees, performing essential functions crucial for sustaining life on Earth. Forests contribute to productive, protective, and regulative functions, providing socioeconomic products, conserving soil, water, and biodiversity, and regulating ecological processes. They also hold aesthetic and spiritual significance, inspiring literature and cultural expressions throughout history. Covering approximately one-third of the Earth's land area and constituting about 90% of biomass, forests play a pivotal role in global ecosystems. Tropical forests, making up nearly 50% of the world's forests, are just one among several terrestrial biomes. Biomes vary based on climate, resulting in diverse plant and animal species adapted to specific environmental conditions. However, deforestation emerges as a grave environmental problem, especially evident in the rapid loss of the biodiversity-rich Amazon forests. Population growth, shifting cultivation, industrial demand for wood, and various human activities contribute to deforestation, leading to adverse impacts on the biosphere. Blocking the crucial process of photosynthesis, deforestation disturbs the balance of life. The utmost need of protecting and conserving existing forests and facilitating their regeneration through social forestry, farm forestry, rural forestry, and urban forestry initiatives has been emphasized. Agroforestry is also highlighted as a valuable approach to mitigate the impacts of agricultural practices on forests. Safeguarding, rejuvenating, and conserving forest resources are imperative to maintain ecological balance and preserve the planet's biodiversity.
