Water resources encompass diverse habitats, including oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and groundwater, supporting a wide array of organisms and ecosystems. The chapter emphasizes the dynamic nature of water resources, exploring their various attributes such as photosynthesis, ecological integrity, thermodynamics, biochemical reactions, and role in food production and nutritional security. A substantial portion of the planet’s water is saline, primarily found in the five oceans, with the Pacific Ocean covering the largest area. The Himalayan glaciers, often referred to as the Third Pole, play a critical role in sustaining over 500 million people, serving as the source of vital rivers that provide drinking water, irrigation, and livelihoods for billions in the surrounding regions. Running water bodies, such as rivers and streams, are crucial sources of potable water and provide numerous socioeconomic benefits, including hydroelectricity generation. Groundwater constitutes a significant source of freshwater supplies, but its depletion is a growing concern due to excessive exploitation. The chapter emphasizes the dependence of all economic sectors on water and discusses the adverse impacts of water scarcity, pollution, and mismanagement on a country’s or region’s economy. With a rising global population, increasing demand for water-intensive food production, and wasteful water practices, water crises are intensifying, leading to socioeconomic challenges in various parts of the world. The escalating water demand, coupled with diminishing water availability, poses a significant concern. Agriculture, industry, and the domestic sector are the major consumers of freshwater, with agriculture accounting for the highest share globally.
