Biogeochemical cycles, also known as nutrient cycles, govern the essential movement, transformation, and reuse of nutrients vital for plant, animal, and microbial life. These cycles can be categorized into sedimentary and gaseous cycles, depending on their main reservoirs in rocks or the atmosphere and water bodies, respectively. The hydrological cycle involves the exchange of water between various environmental components, such as oceans, atmosphere, land, and living organisms. Seven major stages, including evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, facilitate water movement and residence time in different reservoirs. The nitrogen cycle, a gaseous cycle, converts molecular nitrogen into compounds essential for living organisms through nitrogen fixation. This process can occur physically, biologically, or industrially. Carbon, a key component for sustaining life, undergoes fixation through photosynthesis and moves within organisms through food chains. Oxygen, crucial for energy generation, exists in various forms in the atmosphere and is involved in water and carbon cycles. Phosphorus, abundant in mineral deposits, is recycled through ecosystems, while sulfur is utilized by diverse organisms for protein synthesis and energy generation. These biogeochemical cycles intricately interact within ecosystems, supporting life on Earth. Understanding these cycles is vital for comprehending ecosystem dynamics and addressing global environmental challenges.
