Solid waste management is a crucial process that involves controlling the generation, storage, collection, transfer, processing, and disposal of solid wastes. It encompasses a range of technologies aimed at harnessing energy from waste materials. The six functional components of solid waste management include waste identification, on-site handling and storage, waste collection from various sources, waste transfer, waste processing to sort reusable and recyclable materials, and final disposal, often at landfill sites. The generation of solid wastes stems from various factors, such as population growth, economic affluence, modern use-and-throw lifestyles, and waste-generating technologies. Improper management of accumulated waste can lead to detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and other organisms. To address these challenges, solid waste management utilizes various methods. Incineration involves controlled burning of wastes at high temperatures to reduce volume and minimize land use for disposal. Pyrolysis decomposes solid wastes into carbon-enriched residues, chemicals, and gases. Composting utilizes microorganisms to degrade organic waste into compost and CO2, enriching soil fertility and crop productivity. Vermicomposting employs earthworms to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost, an organic fertilizer for sustainable agriculture. Sanitary landfills use impervious linings to prevent groundwater contamination, with waste decomposition producing methane for electricity generation. Additionally, waste recovery and recycling play vital roles in eco-friendly and cost-effective solid waste management. By following the 3 Rs rule of reduce, reuse, and recycle, valuable resources are conserved, energy is saved, and environmental pollution is significantly reduced.
