This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of air pollution, encompassing its definition, causes, effects, and prevention and control measures. Air pollution occurs when harmful substances exceed the natural capacity of the atmosphere to disperse and dilute them, and pollutants can be classified as primary, secondary, hazardous, or indoor air pollutants based on their origin and properties. Understanding the sources of air pollution is crucial, as it includes both point sources, such as industrial emissions and fossil fuel combustion, and nonpoint sources like vehicle emissions and agricultural activities. This chapter highlights the formation of photochemical smog, a type of air pollution that occurs when sunlight reacts with pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, leading to the production of harmful chemicals.
