This chapter delves into the significance and challenges surrounding the extraction and utilization of minerals found in Earth's crust. Minerals, being exhaustible and non-renewable, greatly influence the socioeconomic status of societies and countries. Their distribution varies geographically, with mineral deposits of economic importance known as ores. Metallic minerals like gold, copper, and iron, and non-metallic minerals such as calcium carbonate and phosphates, serve diverse industrial and construction purposes. The formation of mineral resources involves processes like cooling of molten rock, weathering, heat and pressure, evaporation, and microbial actions. Mining, the extraction of minerals from the Earth, has profound environmental impacts, including biodiversity loss, landscape degradation, ground subsidence, disruption of hydrological cycles, and pollution. These consequences pose direct and indirect health hazards to living beings, including humans. To mitigate the environmental impact, reclamation and restoration of derelict lands through revegetation and eco-friendly mining technologies are crucial. Conservation of mineral resources is vital, and this can be achieved through decreased consumption, reuse, recycling, substitution, and the adoption of alternative energy sources to reduce dependency on energy-yielding minerals. Balancing the socioeconomic benefits with environmental conservation is imperative to secure a prosperous and ecologically sound future. By implementing measures to minimize environmental damage and optimize resource use, humanity can strive towards a more sustainable and resilient mineral resource utilization paradigm.
