Agriculture and Food Resources

  • Vir Singh

摘要

Food provides nutrients and energy necessary for metabolism and bodily functions. Primitive man obtained food from natural forests, rich in diverse edible fruits, nuts, and other plant-based resources. However, following the Green Revolution, agriculture has shifted towards a limited number of cultivated crops, resulting in a global dependence on a few primary food crops, such as rice, wheat, and maize, leading to concerns about food security. Critical role of agriculture in providing sustenance for humanity has been emphasized. Livestock also plays a vital socioeconomic role, contributing various products and services to human society. The agricultural practices of the Green Revolution and the subsequent trends of liberalization, privatization, and globalization have raised environmental concerns and intensified the depletion of natural resources. Macronutrients from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats form the core of human nutrition, while micronutrients, vitamins and minerals, are largely derived from fruits and vegetables. Adequate water availability is essential for nutritional security. However, the current state of the human-controlled biosphere is marked by an inverted ecological pyramid and a straight food pyramid, resulting from food production through overexploitation of natural resources. Addressing the challenges of population growth, undernourishment, malnourishment, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency diseases, sustainable agriculture emerges as a vital approach. Sustainable agriculture operates on ecological principles, focusing on biodiversity, maintaining living soil, and promoting cyclic nutrient flows to meet the needs of the present population without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfill their own food requirements.
