This chapter delves into the fundamental components and dynamics of the environment, offering insights into the intricate relationships that sustain life on our planet. The environment is a complex system composed of physical, chemical, and biological factors, serving as the surroundings for all living beings. It consists of abiotic and biotic components, which are inseparable and interact intricately. The abiotic components encompass nonliving factors like soil and climate, while the biotic components involve living organisms categorized as producers, consumers, and decomposers. The Earth’s physical environment comprises the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, all interconnected. The lithosphere forms the Earth’s outer crust, supporting continents and basins. The hydrosphere includes the entire planet’s water, while the atmosphere is a transparent layer of gases, primarily composed of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide. The atmosphere is divided into distinct layers based on temperature and gaseous composition, including the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. Ecology, introduced by Ernst Haeckel in 1866, studies the mutual interactions between organisms and their environment. The biotic and abiotic components of the environment influence each other, shaping the ecosystems and the evolutionary processes of life. Organisms engage with their environment at various spatial and temporal scales, contributing to the intricate web of life in the biosphere.
