摘要

Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer, obtained from renewable sources, and finds several applications including pharmaceutical and cosmetical uses. One significant advantage of cellulose hydrogels, obtained from mechanic or chemical methods, is heir biocompatibility, been considered safe for use. This allows cellulose hydrogels to be applied through various routes, such as oral, topical, transdermal, subcutaneous, pulmonary, and intravenous administration. When associated with other biopolymers like polysaccharides, cellulose acts as a reinforcement for the gel and film structure, thereby controlling drug release. Additionally, the use of nanocarriers in the cellulose-based hydrogels could enhance skin permeation. This chapter demonstrates that cellulose hydrogels have proven effective for oral administration and topical applications, while other promising routes like injectable and pulmonary present potential applications.
