Demonstrating the Triad-Built Environment, Perception and Neighborhood as Tool to Achieve Urban Resilience

The built environment has been physical evidence of human existence since time immemorial, thus it also serves as a clue toward understanding the impact on the morphology of a given place over time. Planners and designers have used this built environment as a tool for articulating, manipulating, and transforming the settings to achieve urban resilience. But how this built environment is perceived by the residents, opens an avenue for research in the field. The smallest unit in an urban setting to demonstrate the perception of residents toward their immediate built environment is the neighborhood. Therefore, the paper will explain the theoretical premise that revolves around three themes-built environments, neighborhoods, and residents’ perceptions. The aim is to enlist key attributes that would emerge through this triad and arrive at a framework that would allow the planners and designers to function through the lens of residents’ perceptions. The paper would initiate with the relevance of urban resilience in the Indian context and the role-built environment plays in achieving urban resilience. Secondly, it would be defining each aspect of the triad-built environments, neighborhoods, and perception. Further, the research will try to analyze the theoretical premise of the triad and propose a framework that would be demonstrated in a neighborhood in the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.
