An Innovative Retrofittable Manually Operable Smart Shading Apparatus for House Windows (Residential Buildings) and Method of Working for Same

ShadeSmart-Residential is a novel movable shading system which can be integrated externally with windows to enhance occupant thermal comfort in new and existing Indian residential buildings. The device also helps optimize energy consumption for cooling in air-conditioned residential buildings. The technology has been designed for pan-India applicability. The user can generate an optimized configuration for their window based on the building’s geographic location (latitude), the climate type, window size and orientation. Each ShadeSmart configuration comes with a recommended operation schedule to ensure best performance of the shading system. The performance has been established through software-based simulation and validated through performance monitoring of the fabricated prototype in real environmental conditions for a period of one year. The device can reduce direct solar heat gain to bring about thermal comfort and occupant well-being.
