Thermal Comfort Study of a Dining Space in Temperate Climate Using Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation is one of the passive strategies to maintain thermal comfort in buildings. This strategy has been explored for a dining space in a high rise commercial building in temperate climate zone of Bangalore. The weather of Bangalore offers comfortable temperature for thermal comfort. Therefore, natural ventilation was achieved by analyzing the climate of Bangalore. Automated operable windows was designed to control the wind speed in the range of 1.0–1.5 m/s thereby maintaining a ventilation rate in the range of 21–24 changes per hour. The ventilation maintained a temperature below 30 °C achieving thermal comfort for diners. Window opening was maintained in the range of 15–95% controlling the outdoor wind speed varying between 1.2 and 7.8 m for 64% of occupancy hours in dining space.
