Characterization of Al-PUR Sandwich Panel by Mechanical Testing and Rocket Launch-Induced Dynamic Environment Testing

Composite panel with Aluminium (Al) facings (1.2 mm thick) on either side and Polyurethane (PUR) foam (30 mm thick) as core material assembled with Aluminium frames is envisaged as material of construction for white room at launch pad. The present work experimentally investigates the integrity of Al-PUR sandwich panel by subjecting it to mechanical tests as per ASTM standards and examining it in dynamic launch environment during solid motor static test as well as actual rocket lift-off in a closely simulated location as that of the original requirement. Mechanical tests are performed to obtain its flatwise tensile, compressive, core shear, and flexural properties, whereas the effects of dynamic parameters like acoustics, vibration, heat flux, over pressure, air, and face temperatures which usually controls the structural integrity during Launch environment are investigated during PSLV launch and solid motor static test. This composite panel is also exposed in thermal humidity testing chamber to verify its integrity at elevated temperatures.
