摘要

Composite fabrication by Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), becomes challenging while implementing on structures having complicated shapes with various thickness level. Resin impregnation in fiber preforms is required to be controlled in sequential manner for getting quality product. The main motive of automating the process is to reduce flaws and human error. Sequential resin propagation is controlled using customized solenoid valves triggered by LabView-based developed GUI. Parallel to this, various real-time parameters (optical sensors response, vacuum compaction, resin tray level, resin tray temperature, etc.), pertaining to structure under fabrication is monitored on same platform. The developed system automatically monitors as well as intelligently controls the flowing of resin within mold so as to mitigate the variations in flow front and carryout smooth infusion process. Characterization of composite samples prepared by automated system reflected better results with low dimensional variation compared to manual setup. This paper focuses on the tasks performed to implement VARTM automation based on feedback control action through embedded fiber optic sensors.
