摘要

In this chapter, we examine how the linguistic landscape in Hong Kong reflects globalization and localization. Globalization has led to the widespread use of English on signs in affluent commercial areas in Hong Kong. Localization, on the other hand, manifests in the presence of Cantonese on governmental signs, international brands, company slogans, and shop signs of small businesses as a way of expressing solidarity and constructing Hong Kong identity. We will show that various languages such as traditional Chinese, written Cantonese and English compete for public space, and contribute to the symbolic construction of a city image that combines international and local characteristics.
