Child Sexual Abuse in India: Understanding the Problem, Responding to the Challenges, and Charting a Way Forward

In India, child sexual abuse is a significant public health concern with a high prevalence rate. This chapter offers an overview of child sexual abuse, including its various forms and the factors that make children more susceptible to abuse. The influence of cultural and social norms in contributing to the problem also makes it challenging to prevent and address child sexual abuse effectively. The chapter proposes strategies for preventing abuse, such as educating children and caregivers about body safety and boundaries. It also outlines the proper response to disclosures of abuse and highlights the legal framework in India for safeguarding children. Despite legal protections, India still faces challenges and gaps in responding to child sexual abuse, such as underreporting, lack of resources, and social and cultural barriers. The chapter concludes by recommending solutions to address these challenges, such as increasing funding for prevention and response programs and strengthening the legal framework to better protect children.
