Economic Evaluation of UAV-Based Soil Sampling Approaches

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used for soil sampling in agricultural contexts, and this book chapter examines the comprehensive evaluation of the financial aspects involved. This chapter systematically dissects the various cost components involved in UAV-based soil sampling, encompassing equipment and technology expenses, labor costs, maintenance outlays, data processing and management charges, as well as overhead and operational expenditures. A comparative analysis against traditional soil sampling methods underscores the inefficiencies of the latter, highlighting UAV-based approaches’ advantages in terms of precision and efficacy. This chapter presents two insightful case studies to underscore the cost-benefit dynamics. The first case investigates precision fertilization, revealing how UAV-derived soil data enhanced accuracy and yielded quantifiable economic gains. The second case focuses on soil health management, exemplifying how UAV technology optimized resource allocation, resulting in cost savings. Sensitivity analysis and risk assessment strategies are discussed, addressing uncertainties and potential mitigations to enhance economic outcomes. Practical considerations, scalability concerns, and influence of various factors like farm size, crop types, and environmental conditions on economic viability are also explored. The chapter concludes with recommendations for implementing cost-effective UAV-based soil sampling, including collaboration strategies, optimized flight planning, and leveraging existing technology.
