The Cultural Background of Political Humor “Sung” by the Spanish People

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship betweenManga culture, politics, and humor in one of Spain’s most popular celebrations, the Cádiz CarnivalCádiz Carnival (Spain). The protagonist, in contrast to the magnificence of other carnivals in the world, is the discourse written by the ordinary people to be sung. Groups such as “chirigotas”Cádiz and “comparsasComparsas” compose and rehearse humorous, satirical, and even biting or acidic lyrics that portray all the current events, competing for weeks in an official contest broadcast live on television. The Final of the Gran Teatro Falla Contest has become a true political thermometer and a popular indicator with which to detect issues concerning the citizenry. Its shrewd and humorous lyrics go viral through the internet and social networksSocial networks, criticizing local, regional and national political powers, while addressing topical social issues. All this is accompanied by characterization and scenography in accordance with the lyrics, so that costumes, acting, staging, and voices are of the utmost importance. This study will employ a Relevance TheoryRelevance Theory pragmatic analysis of the lyrics by groups that competed from January 21, 2023 to the grand finale almost a month later.
