Using Geographic Information Systems in a Spatial History Course to Develop Students’ Digital Literacies and Digital Humanities Skills

In this chapter, an innovative way to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a Spatial History Course to Develop Students’ Digital Literacies and Digital Humanities Skills is introduced. The authors detail the design of the innovation, the two rounds of implementations and, discuss the challenges they faced implementing the innovation. The chapter ends with advice to other history instructors on how they might capitalize on the benefits of GIS in Spatial History Courses.
