The design of guide vanes start with identifying the main dimensions. At this moment, the main dimensions of the runner are already calculated, including D1 and \(C_{u1}\) . A vaneless gap is present between the outlet of guide vanes and the inlet of runner. It is possible to calculate the tangential component of absolute velocity at the outlet of the guide vane, \(C_{ugvo}\) , by using free vortex theory. Inside the vaneless space between guide vanes and runner, the swirl component of the flow is driven only by the diameter of the turbine; hence, \(C_{u} r = {\text{constant}}\) relation can be followed.
