Calculation of the Main Dimensions of Francis Runner

The design process of Francis turbines starts with calculating the main dimensions of the runner, i.e., outlet diameter, D2, inlet diameter, D1, inlet height, B1, and components of the velocity triangles at inlet and outlet. The concept of velocity triangles discussed in the previous chapter is used to design main dimensions of Francis turbine. The input data from the power plant, head and flow rate are used as the starting point along with some empirical relations.
