Exosomes: Biogenesis, Composition, and Synthesis

Exosomes are tiny, membrane-bound vesicles that are present in many body fluids and perform important functions in cell-to-cell communication. The creation of early endosomes that develop into multivesicular bodies (MVBs) is a key step in this process. These MVBs may merge with lysosomes to be degraded, or they can fuse with the plasma membrane and release their intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) as exosomes. Proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids including microRNAs and messenger RNAs are all packed within exosomes’ lipid bilayer membrane. Different cell types and normal or abnormal environments result in exosomes with distinct chemical profiles. Molecular processes such as the endosomal sorting complexes needed for transport (ESCRT) pathway and ESCRT-independent pathways closely control exosome production. These processes guarantee that exosomes are released into the extracellular space after being used to selectively sort their payload. Learning about exosomes’ biogenesis, composition, and synthesis is crucial because it sheds light on their functional activities and paves the way for future exosome-based diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
