Recent Trends to Address Microplastic Waste at the Global Level

Microplastics are a nuisance to marine and terrestrial ecosystems. These tiny particles of plastic can also originate from the degeneration of large plastic units. Being nonbiodegradable, they have the ability to stay for hundreds and thousands of years. They even pollute the sand on the shores and alter its texture. They are easily consumed by sea creatures leaving their presence inside them because of their tiny size of less than 5 mm. Various governmental, nongovernmental, and private sector agencies are taking efforts to deal with the problem of microplastic in ecosystems. This chapter makes an attempt toward understanding the global initiatives for the reduction of microplastic in the natural ecosystems.
