Sources, Uses and Transport of Secondary Microplastics from Land to Marine Environment

The widespread distribution of microplastics has resulted in a pervasive environmental pollution issue with global implications impacting diverse ecosystems, including terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments. The role of the small-scale plastic material in question in contributing substantially to the deterioration of the marine ecosystem has been observed, thus necessitating its recognition as an issue of significant concern. A variety of secondary microplastic sources are present, which include terrestrial origins such as plastic litter fragmentation, industrial activities, and synthetic material degradation. The aforementioned sources can be subsequently introduced into the aquatic ecosystem through various mechanisms, including atmospheric deposition, wastewater discharge, and river transport. Upon their introduction to aquatic environments, secondary microplastics inflict negative impacts on aquatic fauna. This phenomenon is primarily ascribed to the inclination of these organisms to consume microplastics, thereby perpetuating toxicity throughout the food chain and posing potential hazards to human health. Aside from the potential perilous ramifications of microplastics, secondary microplastics are utilized in the agricultural industry as a soil amendment and as a filtration material in the treatment of wastewater. Consequently, to efficaciously mitigate the perilous perils presented by secondary metabolites, diverse measures may be implemented, such as diminishing the employment of plastics and plastic refuse, improving waste disposal procedures, introducing sophisticated methodologies for removing microplastics from the surroundings, and advocating for sustainable models of production and consumption. The implementation of appropriate strategies is imperative in mitigating the adverse effects of secondary microplastics on the natural environment.
