Reports of Microplastic in Human Blood

Plastic pollution is a growing concern with potential impacts on human health. Research has identified plastic particles in various environmental compartments, including sediment, seawater, and human feces. The blood compartment has been identified as a suitable matrix for human biomonitoring of plastic particles. Various analytical approaches have been developed to identify and quantify plastic particles in biological matrices, including mass concentrations of polymers using pyrolysis-GC/MS. In the present chapter, an attempt was made to review all literature available on the detection of microplastic in human blood under the following lines: (1) to enlist sources, types of microplastics, and possible ways of their entry in the human body, (2) to review the reports on microplastic detection in human blood, (3) to highlight the techniques used to detect the microplastic in human blood, (4) to discuss the potential health implications of microplastics in the body, and (5) to suggest the strategies to minimize the entry of microplastic in human body.
