An ISM-DEMATEL Integrated Perspective for Investigating the Drivers of Sustainable Manufacturing for an Indian SME

Today, the industry faces the test of agreeing with stringent ecological enactment due to the shortage of global warming, waste management, and natural resources issues. Expanding small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) in India is critical since they account for a large portion of total manufacturing output. In this age of globalization, SMEs are under pressure to maintain long-term profitability by cutting costs while still being environmentally sensitive. This study aims to recognize 12 drivers based on expert views through surveys and literature. In this article, the hierarchical and contextual relationship structures between SM drivers were addressed using the intergraded approach of “decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL)” and “interpretive structural modeling (ISM).” After-effects of the study indicate that "social and environmental responsibility," "employees motivation, health, and safety," and "scarcity of resources and higher waste generation" are essential drivers, as illustrated in a new ISM-DEMATEL methodology. Thus, our research will help prioritize the critical drivers for SM practices in Indian SMEs.
