Progress and Effectiveness of Informatization in the Scientific Observing Network of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the Western Pacific Ocean

The Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Science has established a scientific observing network in the western Pacific Ocean, with objectives to meet requirements of the national marine power strategy and to resolve the key scientific questions, such as formation and evolution of ocean energy and material confluence in the Indo-Pacific convergent area. The deep ocean data are real-time transmitted to the surface buoy through the wireless acoustic and inductive coupling communications, and then to the office through the Beidou satellite in an autonomous and controlled manner. We further build a data application system to help users acquire and analyze observation data efficiently. This network compensates for the deficiency of long-term continuous subsurface, intermediate, and deep layer data in the western Pacific, and contributes to many innovative research findings, including systematically revealing the temporal-spatial variations of three-dimensional ocean circulations in the western Pacific and their climate effect, proposing new mechanisms for the propagating of climate signal into the abyssal ocean, and providing supports for the improvements of the ocean environment and climate simulations and predictions.
