Open Source Ecosystem in New Era: Pattern and Trend

At the end of the twentieth century, open source provided new ideas of user driven innovation, low cost and high quality for software development, and therefore achieved great success. An increasing number of companies and organizations have participated in open source, from hybrid commercial-open source projects, and driven the construction of various business models around open source software technology and platform. The intensive commercial participation in open source has promoted the cooperation and interest relationships among participants and formed an “open source software ecosystem.” Around 1997, open source software began to develop in China. At that time, it mainly focused on the development of basic software such as operating system and made some progress, but the effect of open source software was not significant enough. In recent years, with the rapid development of the new generation of information technology, open source software has gradually been valued and developed rapidly in China. This paper studies the elements and commercialization of open source software ecosystem, and provides theoretical supports for the construction of open source software ecosystem in China by combining with the current development status in China.
