Sugar Beet Waste as Substrate for Microbial Production of Food Ingredients

This chapter explored the potential of sugar beet waste as a valuable resource for biorefinery processes through fermentation. Sugar beet is a major crop used for large-scale sugar production. The chapter emphasized the types of liquid and solid waste generated during sugar beet processing, including molasses and sugar beet pulp, which contain valuable compounds like cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin. These waste materials can be utilized in various applications, including animal feed, bioethanol production, and the generation of biochemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. Fermentation is presented as a powerful tool for valorization, converting organic compounds into valuable products through microbial action. The biorefinery approach, inspired by traditional petroleum refineries, aims to extract maximum value from renewable resources and waste streams. Sugar beet waste, including pulp and residual components, can be effectively utilized in biorefinery processes, providing a long-term and comprehensive approach to value development.
