Conflict and Displacement on the Psychosocial Well-Being/Mental Health of Females

In recent years, forced displacement due to violent conflict, civil unrest, and territorial transfer has been a significant cause of social exclusion in Nigeria. Conflicts often cause large-scale displacement of people due to destruction of homes and environment, religious or political persecution. This had taken a bad turn in the mental health of females who found themselves in different internally displaced camp scattered all over the northeastern part of Nigeria. The paper examines the impact of displacement on the psychosocial well-being of females in Bakassi IDPs Camp, Maiduguri. It argues on the failure and inability of the Nigerian government, researchers and NGOs to respond to the psychosocial well-being of females in IDP. This paper identified the general effects of displacement on the lives of females and the factors that affect the psychosocial well-being of females in the Bakassi IDP camps in Maiduguri. The paper suggested how women and girls can be rehabilitated sociocultural and psychologically. The findings of the study will be useful to state and non-state actors in the conflict zone of Nigeria. Ways on how victims of insurgency can be reintegrated in mainstream community were highlighted. This paper adopted a qualitative research design based on the content analysis of both primary and secondary sources of data collection, making use of focus group discussions (FGDs) and interviews with displaced females in Bakassi IDP Camp in Maiduguri. A descriptive method of analysis was used to critically analyze the outcome in detail by citing and quoting the respondents’ views. The issues that affect the psycho-social well-being of the females living in Bakassi IDP were explored. The article will address the SDGs good health and well-being, gender equalities, sustainable cities and communities, and peace, justice, and strong institutions.
