Speakers’ Attitudes Toward Regional, Shirazi and Standard Persian: A Cognitive Sociolinguistic Lectal Study on Persian in Fars Province

This study aims, on the one hand, at the relationship between lectalLectals variations of the Persian language and, on the other hand, Standard PersianStandard Persian (SP), Shirazi, and Regional varietiesVariety, regarding the sociolinguistic situation in Fars Province: what is the social statusSocial status of these varietiesVariety among Fars Province residents? What are the impacts of Regional lectalsLectals on the attitudes that form judgments about speakers' identity and character? The methodology of this research comprises the survey method, MGTMatched-guise technique (MGT) and interview. The studied communities include Shiraz, Marvdasht, Kazeroon, Fasa, Jahrom, and several smaller cities near Shiraz. To collect data, a total of 490 participants contributed. The results indicate that regional varietiesVariety are dominant in the circle of family and friends to show solidaritySolidarity and loyalty with their lectalsLectals. In education, the workplace, the streets, the media, and elite speech, Standard lectalLectals signifies power, prestige, and social statusSocial status.
