Persian has two sets of simple and special encliticsEnclitics that attach to a wide varietyVariety of syntactic hosts. Some of them appear only in theInformal variety of Persian informal varietyVariety of spoken PersianSpoken Persian, while others appear, both in informal, as well as formal varietiesVariety with different pronunciations. The first part of this chapter deals with the different forms that the encliticsEnclitics have in different phonetic contexts in both varietiesVariety. Since many of the encliticsEnclitics are vowel-initial, their attachment to a vowel-final host results in the epenthesisEpenthesis of a consonantConsonants or the deletionDeletion of one of the vowelsVowels, mainly that of the encliticEnclitics. The second part of the chapter is devoted to the prosody of encliticsEnclitics which has received much attention in the literature. The majority of Persian encliticsEnclitics do not change the stress pattern of their host. As such, they can be classified as free cliticsFree clitics. However, some encliticsEnclitics are accented in informal Persian and have assumed the status of internal affixesAffix, internal to prosodic words andPhonological/ Prosodic word phonological phrasesPhonological phrase.
