The DPP is designed to enhance transparency and sustainability by providing comprehensive product information throughout the value chain, aligning with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. By facilitating access to data on product origin, composition, end-of-life handling, and repair options, the DPP supports environmental, economic, and social sustainability. A decentralized data management approach underpins the DPP, ensuring flexibility and interoperability. The paper highlights the importance of the DPP in improving informed consumer choices, waste management, and sustainable product design. It also addresses stakeholder perspectives, revealing broad support for the DPP despite concerns over implementation complexities and associated costs. The CIRPASS project (Collaborative Initiative for a Standards-based Digital Product Passport for Stakeholder-Specific Sharing of Product Data for a Circular Economy) plays a crucial role in the development of the DPP, aiming to establish a harmonized framework and guidelines that foster collaboration among stakeholders. The project’s contributions are vital to the successful implementation of the DPP. Looking ahead, the next steps in the DPP’s development include conducting pilot projects to test and refine the system, as well as developing standards by CEN/CENELEC to ensure consistency and interoperability. The adoption of Delegated acts by the European Commission are essential for establishing the technical specifications and regulatory requirements. These acts include the specification of data requirements, the interoperability of data systems, and the enforcement mechanisms. Overall, the paper underscores the DPP’s critical role in advancing circular economy practices and highlights its alignment with broader EU sustainability objectives.
