Optimal Power Flow by Genetic Algorithm

This section suggests a definition of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) and describes how to simulate OPF on a typical sample system using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). The term “OPF” is employed to refer to a modified power flow that aims to achieve optimize an objective function while still conforming the technical and security restrictions. This section will emphasize reducing fuel costs, however, this objective function may include lowering network losses and other such factors. Traditional mathematical approaches for OPF are quite sophisticated, in which the model must be linearized first, and they may be imprisoned at the local minimum point. As a result, numerous studies have recently used metaheuristic algorithms, including GA, to study OPF. In doing so, GA is used to identify the overall best answer, and it employs a method called natural selection to do so. Finally, in this chapter, the OPF was performed on the IEEE 33-bus and 118-bus standard system by utilizing the evolutionary algorithm in an effort to reduce fuel costs.
