Lumbar Drain

Lumbar drain placement is a procedure to allow controlled drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The continuous lumbar drain system was first introduced by Voursh in the early 1960. Continuous lumbar drainage is a simple, effective, and safe procedure in preventing and/or managing CSF leakage of various etiologies. A basic understanding of lumbar drains is essential in patient management. This chapter outlines the indications, technique, and troubleshoot to the complications due to lumbar drain.
