Experimental Investigation into the Acoustic Black Hole Vibrating Absorbing Effect and Its Automotive Applications

Damping of structural vibration using acoustic black hole (ABH) has shown great potential in vibration and sound control area. A great variety of ABH structures have been proposed and investigated based on theoretical, numerical and experimental methods. The experimental test of ABH effect applied to a real equipment is still lacking. In this paper, the experimental investigation into the ABH’s vibrating absorbing effect and its automotive applications are reported. An ABH dynamic vibration absorber (ABH-DVA) is manufactured and attached to the surface of the engine-cover, in order to absorbing the vibration of the cover transmitted by the operating engine. The vibration and sound radiation are measured with and without the ABH-DVA. Results show that the proposed ABH-DVA could provide an effective damping for the vibration and sound radiation of the engine cover in a nearly non-intrusive manner. This work thus demonstrates the potential of ABH in the application of automotive vibration and sound control.
