The Design of Smart Cane SC+
摘要
Vision loss is an emerging public health problem, and it can lead to psychological stress. Several places are not easily accessible for the blind and visually impaired, so there are risks of accidents and injuries. Mobility assistance without technology (white cane and guide dog) is widely used but has some deficiencies. This project will utilize IoT to transform a white cane into a smart cane embedded with sensors and actuators. The smart cane SC+ will be designed to help people with blindness and visual impairment increase their mobility, reduce the risk of injuries, and navigate outside their comfort zone with confidence. In addition to having vibration and audio alerts that inform users of the obstacles ahead, SC+ will be connected to an app via Bluetooth to send emergency calls and messages. Major components and their relationships, obstruction distance calculations, and the behaviour of the SC+ system are explored in this paper.
