摘要

Developing the nighttime economy will not only expand consumer demand and contribute to high-quality economic development but also prosper the market, create jobs, invigorate cities, and promote the formation of a new development pattern. Using China's provincial panel data from 2010 to 2021, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of nighttime economy development on urban residents’ consumption through a fixed effect model. The results show that, from the perspective of China as a whole, there is a significant correlation between the development of the nighttime economy and household consumption. The development of the nighttime economy will promote the upgrading of household consumption structures. This demonstrates how the nighttime economy, as an emerging field, has opened up new opportunities for the urban economy and increased demand, particularly for consumption. According to a study on regional heterogeneity in China, the nighttime economy has a favorable effect on the modernization of people's consumption structures in North China, East China, central South China, and Northwest China. For the northeast and southwest regions, the nighttime economy has a negative impact on the upgrading of residents’ consumption structures. Different urban spaces affect the promotion effect of the night economy on the consumption structure of urban residents. The results of this study suggest that expanding domestic demand and giving full play to the advantages of China's market provide new policy ideas, and regions should develop nighttime economies according to local conditions, enrich the forms of urban economic activities, promote leisure consumption, and drive economic growth.
