Remittances and Regional Cooperation: Economic Impacts and National Interests in Central Asia
摘要
Remittances play a central role in the economies of Central Asia, contributing significantly to national GDP and the livelihoods of millions of households. This chapter examines the impact of remittances on the region’s economic stability and social development, as well as the challenges posed by over-reliance on these cash flows. As many Central Asian countries such as Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan are highly dependent on remittances from migrant workers, this study examines the socioeconomic consequences of these financial transfers, including poverty reduction, improved health and education, and changes in household dynamics. The chapter also highlights the complexity of managing remittance flows, with a particular focus on the role of financial institutions, informal remittance channels, and the potential of digital innovations to reduce remittance costs. It also examines how regional cooperation can enhance the benefits of remittances by improving financial systems, supporting policy coordination, and addressing challenges such as migration management and transnational financial services. The chapter concludes with recommendations for sustainable economic growth in Central Asia, emphasizing the need to diversify the region’s economies and reduce dependence on remittances while using these financial inflows to promote long-term development. Through a comprehensive analysis, this chapter highlights the critical importance of regional integration and policy innovation in maximizing the development potential of remittances in Central Asia.
