OBSERVO: Teaching Strategy Recommendation by Monitoring Student Behavior Patterns

It is not uncommon to see students lose their attention in class. This lack of attentiveness, however, does not indicate a lack of potential in students. This realization provoked the development of a revolutionary product to improve classroom conditions, with the primary aim to enhance the progress of students attending schools and encourage people to send their children to schools. This research work presents Observo, a system consisting of thermal and digital cameras and computers, supported with local binary pattern algorithms, designed to enhance the pupil’s mental response towards lectures and studies. It endeavors to incorporate face detection to gage attention in a classroom. The findings of this study could potentially advance research to overcome challenges such as poor attendance rates among disabled and differentially abled children and an increased number of dropouts.
