Soil Health and Climate Change

Soil’s capacity to perform diversified functions, such as sustainability in the production of plants and animals and at the same time preserving and/or improving the environment, is referred to as soil health. Soil organic carbon, biodiversity, infiltration of water, susceptibility to drought, drainage, and soil resistance and resilience are key indices of soil health. One health idea has recently received a lot of attention by emphasizing the linkage between human and animal health with soil health. Numerous soil functions and planned land use are key factors in managing soil health. As part of a framework for soil management assessment, productivity, and environmental protection goals are mainly employed to assess soil health, improve water quality, and mitigate and adapt to changing climate. Anticipated climate change is likely to decrease organic matter content in soil, weaken soil structure, and make the soil susceptible to erosion and other degrading processes, thereby negatively impacting soil health. As a result, in the projected scenario of climate change, increasing carbon sequestration potential through the use of various resource conservation technologies is a practical and affordable method of reducing human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and promoting food security.
